Do you have a garden?
Do you enjoy spending time in a garden?
Do you wish to create a garden sanctuary?

It is a wondrous and incurable obsession, which takes you meandering down garden paths. Just for the sake of meandering. Of course, the obsessed tend toward indulgence. I will be unable to hide my proclivity for the sacred necessity of Adirondack chairs, my infatuation with old garden roses, my enchantment with early summer’s butterfly cabaret, or my distrust of any one who is put off by dirty fingernails. Just so you are forewarned.
“Terry, I’ve been working—playing!!—in the garden and was appreciating it for about the billionth time, so I just wanted to let you know. The way you designed it continues to be wonderful. There isn’t a day that passes that doesn’t bring me joy in this garden. I can’t stay out of it.”— M.R.
The best garden is the one where the gardener finds joy. Think of gardening as telling a story. Your story.

Do you have a story you wish to tell? In addition to my desire to teach myself and others to “do less, live more” through shared practices, books, CDs, and appearances—I also design unique sanctuary gardens and landscapes–for individuals and parishes. My job in creating a sanctuary garden with you is to help you tell your story—the one that sings quietly in your soul.
My garden designs…
- emphasize imagination and the element of surprise, because I believe that the very soul of a garden is shriveled by over-zealous regimentation.
- blend—where feasible—into the natural surrounding, utilizing native shrubs, trees, and perennials.
- emphasize drought tolerance and the judicious use of water.
- display an artistic mix using shrubs, conifers, roses, perennials and annuals—a profusion of texture and color, throughout the seasons.
