Ordinary Farm

>
On a dreary autumn day, when the sky feels like a gray tarp cinched down at the corners, I am invited to experience the world more deeply. I just finished Gene Logsdon’s book, The Contrary-Farmer. Logsdon tells the story about the painter Andrew Wyeth and his connection to neighbor Karl Kuerner and the Kuerner farm in Pennsylvania. Wyeth had done hundreds of paintings on that farm, including many of his most famous works. Had he exhausted the possibilities of this humble, unpretentious-looking bit of farmland? By no means. Karl told Logsdon about a conversation with Wyeth, discussing the artistic possibilities of the place and its people. Wyeth said, “Karl, we haven’t even hit the tip of this iceberg yet.” Wyeth’s genius? The ability to see extraordinary beauty and drama in an “ordinary farm.”

The aim of life is to live, and to live means to be aware, joyously, drunkenly, serenely, divinely aware. Henry Miller.
