Terry Hershey is an inspirational speaker, humorist, author, dad, Protestant minister and landscape designer. He is addicted to golf. He lives on Vashon Island, near Seattle. His work has been featured on The Hallmark Channel, CNN, PBS, and NPR. Terry holds a mirror up to our fast-forward, disconnected lives, and offers us the “power of pause”—the wisdom of doing less and living more– in order to to regain emotional and spiritual balance; to find the sacred in every day.
Terry Hershey has served as a Protestant minister, and is now a writer and garden designer on Vashon Island, near Seattle, Washington. He speaks throughout the US on relationships and spirituality and gardening. The Power of Pause (Loyola Press) is his tenth book. Mostly he loves to dance with his son, and watch bald eagles ride the currents in the canyon behind his house.
Terry Hershey has served as a Protestant minister, and is now a writer and garden designer on Vashon Island. Hershey writes about being intoxicated with this world. Terry’s tenth book, The Power of Pause (Loyola Press), celebrates life by hearing the music, not just playing the right notes. In 1994 Terry founded Cotswold Garden & Design, designing gardens that emphasize imagination and the element of surprise. His gardens and books have been featured in Pacific Northwest Magazine (Seattle Times), Seattle Homes and Lifestyle, and the Tacoma News Tribune. He speaks throughout the United States and Canada on relationships and spirituality and gardening. He wrote IN THE GARDEN, a bi-weekly column for the Beachcomber, the Vashon-Maury Island newspaper. Mostly he loves to dance with his son, and watch bald eagles ride the currents in the canyon behind his house.
Most days you’ll find Terry out in his garden, ambling between roses and perennials, believing that he loses much who has no aptitude for idleness. For life is to be lived passionately, fully present and fully alive. Terry enjoys life with his wife, Judith, and son, Zachary, on Vashon, an island in Puget Sound, near Seattle, Washington where ferry is the sole mode of passage. Rule of thumb: if you have to go anywhere, don’t be in a hurry. He loves to dance with his son, and watch bald eagles ride the currents in the canyon behind his house. He tolerates the rain. And, he is addicted to golf. Terry was born and raised in southern Michigan, but his education was a potpourri safari: from Indiana, to England, to California–while earning degrees in Philosophy and Theology. Armed with two degrees, and fueled with some latent workaholism, Terry spent the next few years working as Protestant Minister, a Personnel Director for an organization sending teachers to Japan, and a public relations officer for a firm working in Uganda, Africa. It took a divorce to slow Terry down–a crisis that allowed him to reassess his vocational journey. Like it or not, a moment of truth makes you take notice. The seed of change had begun to take root, and it led to the founding of Hershey & Associates in 1984, an organization which provides workshops and seminars on building balanced lives and healthy relationships. Terry’s message is straightforward and clear on what it means to find balance in a fast paced competitive world. It is clear to all who hear him, that Terry speaks from personal experience, and from the heart. His insight, honesty, and humor have motivated and encouraged individuals and organizations literally around the world. Wherever he goes, the word comes back, “Terry was truly a highlight of our year.” Terry’s newest book The Power of Pause: becoming more by doing less (Loyola Press), talks about the ingredients which allow us to nurture the soul. He is author of seven other works, including Soul Gardening: Cultivating the Good Life, Go Away Come Closer, Giving the Ministry Away and The Nature of an Island.
Terry Hershey lives, writes and teaches The Balanced Life: Living with Passion, Purpose, Heart and Grace. What does it mean to find balance in a fast paced highly competitive world? How do we juggle work and family? How do we separate the essential from the superfluous? What are the root causes to a cluttered or imbalanced life? Hershey leads seminars and retreats around the theme: Do Less, Live More. Healthy organizations ask “Why?” not “How?” They seek effectiveness and not just efficiency. Balanced lives create effective organizations. Balanced people are productive, resourceful and focused. They make a difference.
To hear Terry is not just to gain information. It is an experience. And everywhere Terry speaks, the feedback is unanimous, “Terry Hershey was truly humorous, enlightening and inspiring all in one. He gave us permission to be embraced by grace. He was truly a highlight of our year!” There are many speakers who will gladly give “proscriptions,” telling you what “to do” to find happiness. Terry’s lectures and books inspire one to see that the happiness is already inside.
